Cochineal is one of the most ancient and versatile natural dyes on the planet. It has excellent light- and wash-fastness properties, producing a beautiful range of reds, scarlets, violets, fuchsias and purples. Permanent on all natural fibres, cochineal is used like an acid dye or with a mordant such as alum (which you can find here).
The colour (carminic acid) comes from the bodies of female insects of the species Dactylopius coccus. These insects are farmed on the prickly pear cactus, which is native to Mexico, Central and South America.
Jacquard's Cochineal comes directly from a small, family-owned and operated organic farm co-op outside Lima, Peru.
This Cochineal dye is non toxic and can be used on all natural fibres including cotton, linen, silk, canvas, hemp, wool, wood and more.
This 28.6 gram portion of dye comes presented in a screw top lidded plastic jar. Instructions for its use can be found here.
